Aswad was formed in London in 1975, originally as a trio consisting of Brinsley Forde, Angus "Drummie Zeb" Gaye, and Tony "Gad" Robinson. They quickly gained attention in the UK reggae scene for their energetic live performances and distinctive sound.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Aswad released several successful albums, including "Aswad" (1976) and "New Chapter" (1981), which featured hits like "Warrior Charge" and "Don't Turn Around". Their 1988 album "Distant Thunder" marked a significant commercial breakthrough, especially with the cover of the song "Don't Turn Around", which became a chart-topping hit in several countries.
